20140429 Traveling to the west through the Cairngorms

We never get tired of the pheasants, as they are so gorgeous and just pop up everywhere.

On Tuesday we reluctantly left Aboyne for the longest day's drive of our trip, northwest to Granton-on-Spey (don't you just love it?!), then southwest to near Onich and Glencoe.

This is our route for the day. Driving is a challenge for Allen, who has to pay close attention all day, as roads are two-way (or one track with passing areas), with no shoulder and no room for error, not to mention either up, down, wind-ey, or a combination thereof.

We passed castles in the middle of nowhere...

...mountains of heather mosaics....

... tens of thousands of lambs and sheep....

...more castles, some with sheep...

...some serious hills (this was first gear all the way up in our rental Vauxhall)...

...picturesque cottages (most with satellite dishes)...

...and flocks of pre-school kids on outings (note the overalls and how each holds onto the mothership tow-rope).

Haggis in real life.

I just can't fathom why.

Came upon this, mostly a building museum like the Scandinavians have, and Allen turned in.  What a delightful place, and we had not nearly enough time to do it all.

Part of the site is built around an original prosperous farmstead from the early 1800's, and furnished like it was in the 1930's. This gal sits and knits all day in her 30's garb and answers questions from the rabble.

These two fell in LOVE with Allen because he picked grass for them from across the road.  After we toured the museum and returned along their path, they recognized and were waiting for him...really!

Along one of Scotland's longest lakes, Lake Laggan, 20 miles or so, the result of an aluminum company's dam.

Singing "The Hills are Alive" from The Sound of Music because we feel like we're in Austria. or some such.  Who knew Scotland was so alpine-like and gorgeous?

Reward at the end of a long day's drive; Holly Tree Hotel resort along Loch Leven.
